Azari blinked in the harsh sunlight that filtered through her eyelids. Slowly, she stood and stretched, cracking the kinks that had formed in her spine after an uncomfortable rest against the thick trunk of a tree. Iyaa stepped towards her, his bright eyes teasing. Rolling her eyes, she rubbed his small ears, wincing as her shoulder clicked into place.
"You are so lucky you can sleep while standing." Azari grumbled, slumping against Iyaa's heavily built shoulder.
Iyaa bobbed his head, and Azari heard his familiar voice echo in her mind. "Indeed."
Smiling to herself, she grabbed his saddle from the ground and slung it onto his wide back, glad that it was so light. After tightening the girth, she grabbed the small handle that protruded from the side of the pommel and pulled herself up.
Her piercing green eyes stared across the desolate landscape spread like a map before her. Behind her lay the land of Light, and far in front of her she could spy the gloomy, sinister hills and forests of Dark. Right at that moment, she stood in neither, for there was a wide gap between each force.
Iyaa trembled suddenly, standing alert. His ears flicked around for a moment, then he lay them back. "Listen. Enemy behind."
His soft voice echoed in her thoughts, and mentally she thanked him for the warning. She strained her ears for any sign of life coming from the small forest behind her, and instantly heard a twig snap in the bushes. Tense, she unhooked her feet from the stirrups and spun around in the saddle, balancing on her toes, and grabbed her bow from its hook.
"Who is there?" she growled, pulling an arrow from its quiver and stringing it carefully. When there was no reply, she watched for movement and upon seeing a shadow flit from one bush to the other, she took aim.
The stream-lined arrow sped through the air, the tip burying itself in something's flesh. There was a loud shriek, then whining as the poison that the arrow carried seeped through their veins.
Azari leapt down and pushed away the branches to find a wolf with blazing amber eyes, slump to the ground.
"Wolf." She announced simply, loosening the second arrow from its tight hold.
Iyaa snorted, obviously relieved, and with a flying leap Azari slipped into the saddle.
